WEST VALLEY CITY — Monday is expected to be the busiest shipping day in history for one of the world's largest shipping companies. FedEx estimates it will ship more than 19 million packages, and it's in large part thanks to an increase in online shopping.
Step inside FexEx Express in West Valley City and you'll get a glimpse of what the next 24-hours will look like. Only, now imagine the number of packages you see doubled.
"We had anywhere from 12,000 to 13,000 pieces come through this system this morning," said Sherman Hadley, operations manager. "We'll see another (20,000 to 25,000) outbound tonight just though our location.
Worldwide, FedEx processes about 9 million packages per day, but today they expect more than double that. Hadley says it's all thanks to online holiday shopping.
"It's earlier this year than it ever has been, it's heavier than it ever has been, so it's a recording setting day for us in terms of our outbound," Hadley said.
To make sure all holiday packages arrive on time, FexEd has a staff of 11 meteorologists at its World Hub in Memphis, watching weather patterns and ready to move resources should there be a problem.
Dec. 17 is the last day to ship by FedEx Ground or home delivery if you want your packages to arrive before Christmas. You can also ship FedEx Express up until the Dec. 22, but the prices are much higher.
