Amanda Butterfield ReportingSomeone set a building in Riverton on fire this morning. Investigators are sure it was arson because the same thing happened there just last week.
It's a commercial building that used to house a boat manufacturing business. That business has been sold and now the building is for sale. The problem is, someone keeps trying to burn it down.
Fire crews know the building well by now; this is the second time they've been here in just over a week.
Batt. Chief Brent Speirs, Unified Fire Authority: "There's been some history with this building having some arson related issues."
And they know it's arson because in both cases, the suspect or suspects tried to burn it down the same way.
Batallion Chief Brent Speirs: "There was a bunch combustibles stacked up, and flammable liquids there to more or less cover up the burglary."
And about the burglary, well nothing was ever taken. A vault was broken into but that's it. Investigators are still figuring out how the suspect even got in; it could have been through an open door or forced entry.
As for today's fire, it was called in early this morning. And though Unified Fire authority and South Jordan tag-teamed the blaze...
Batallion Chief Brent Speirs: "Were able to basically stop the fire where we found it."
There were some boats still inside, but they weren't damaged. In all, neither of the attempts to burn the place down didn't cause much damage, only about 10-thousand dollars worth.
Investigators are still trying to figure out who did this and why, hoping they won't be called back out there again next week.
