(KSL News) We have some new information about the investigation into the death of an inmate at the Box Elder County Jail.

Twenty-six-year-old Chad Peterson was at the jail this month on a parole violation. Jail officials told Peterson's family that he committed suicide, but several inmates have contacted the family's attorney, claiming he was beaten to death by guards.

Cache County has confirmed it is observing the investigation as an outside party. Brigham City Police chose not to be involved in the investigation, due to family ties between their department.

As standard procedure, the FBI is looking into the possibility of a civil rights violation.

The Box Elder County Sheriff's Office is not commenting on the case. It is still waiting on the report from the medical examiner.
