SALT LAKE CITY — Kids can walk to school safely after they boogie to new tunes teaching them safety rules.

The Utah Department of Transportation has been playing the catchy songs at school assemblies teaching kids about safely getting to school. They hope that by being fun and interactive, kids will stay safe during the construction season.

"I thought there was just going to be my principal saying be safe and it would be a quick five minute thing but it was actually pretty cool and I liked this assembly a lot," said fifth-grader Emma.

This UDOT-administered safety show is part of a federally funded safe route to school program. In Utah, the Student Neighborhood Access Program, nicknamed SNAP, introduces kids to new resources, and the safest way to school.

"SNAP, Walk and Roll" is free to download on the SNAP website.

Each school principal has these maps showing potential road hazards, like broken sidewalks, around the school. Kids learn the basics about signs and traffic lights and bike safety, like how to properly wear your helmet. Performers also encourage kids to walk and bike to school rather than get a ride from parents.

Students, parents, and teachers say they love the program and that knowledge reduces risks for kids.

"We're very pleased with the message that's conveyed and the lasting impressions that it's having on our students," said Hillcrest Elementary Principal Zach Eagar.
