SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) -- Utah's second-largest school district will randomly test athletes for drugs, starting in spring.
The Granite Board of Education approved the $1.2 million program, which will be financed by a three-year grant from the U.S. Education Department.
In addition to testing for drugs and alcohol, the program also includes classes for sophomores to keep them from using drugs.
Students chosen for testing will be asked to spit into a cup or suck on a 4-inch piece of paper. The paper changes color if it detects drugs or alcohol.
The Granite district has about 70,000 students in Salt Lake County.
