PARK CITY — A Salt Lake City man is dead as the result of injuries he received after crashing his motorcycle early Saturday morning.
The accident occurred east of Park City on U.S. 40. Nathan Champneys, 33, was traveling west toward Salt Lake City at about 1 a.m. when he crashed near the Park City/Kamas exit.
Champneys sustained severe injuries and was flown to to the University of Utah Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday.
- 51 percent of motorcycle drivers in crashes were under 35 years old.
- 73.9 percent had a motorcycle license.
- 60 percent were wearing helmets.
- 52.1 percent of crashes occurred between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
- Most crashes occurred during summer months.
- 29 percent of drivers who hit motorcycles were turning left.
The Utah Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident, but said it appears Champneys drifted off the side of the road onto the median and traveled several hundred feet while trying to correct. The motorcycle eventually went down on its side.
Champneys was not wearing a helmet.
State law requires only motorcycle riders under the age of 18 to wear helmets, but wearing a helmet is smart regardless of age, according to Joe Dougherty with the Utah Department of Public Safety.
"Wearing a helmet gives you a fighting chance at surviving a motorcycle crash," he said.
