Top five most impressive wins this week
Juan Diego over Granger
This was billed as a battle between two undefeated teams. Granger had to be considered the favorite. They were untested against a weak schedule but looked much improved under first year head coach Cecil Thomas. They had the state's leading rusher in Tani Lehauli. The game turned out to be a dud and Juan Diego looks strong just as they always do. The 3A team took it to the 5A team on their home field. Juan Diego crushed Granger 49-7. Jordan over Alta
The Jordan Beetdiggers came into this game ranked No. 1 and have been putting up video game numbers on offense this season. They look like the team to beat in 5A but many wanted to see them perform against another 5A contender like Alta. They had lost six straight to the Hawks in the battle of Sandy. This time they not only won 36-24 but dominated the last three quarters outscoring Alta 29-10. They are now in the driver's seat for the Region 3 title and top seed in the playoffs. East over Woods Cross
East is clearly the favorite in 4A this season and nothing they have done in the first four games of the season has caused anyone to think otherwise. The game against Woods Cross (if you don't count the suspended game against Jordan) was their first big test of the season and their Region 6 opener. They were facing one of the top players in the state in Stanford commit Sean Barton. Despite some turnovers East looked dominant racking up 394 yards of offense and holding Barton to just 48 yards rushing in an impressive start to the Region schedule. Syracuse over Davis
Syracuse came into this game ranked 4th in 5A and is considered a contender for a state championship after reaching the semifinals last season. They dominated their non-region schedule but only one of their wins was against 5A competition. This was their first true test of the season and they passed with flying colors. They were never threatened and scored 28 points against a very good Davis team giving the Titans a great start in their quest for a region title. The win also moved them from No. 4 to No. 2 in the 5A Coaches Poll. Desert Hills over Pine View
While everyone's attention in Southern Utah was on the big game between No. 1 Hurricane and No. 2 Dixie, the Desert Hills Thunder beat Pine View 28-7. Many thought the Thunder would take a step back this season under a new coach and graduating so many seniors from last years team that reached the state championship. Instead they have put together a great start to the season. Their only loss is to Syracuse and they haven't allowed more than 7 points in a game since. We will learn a lot more about them in the next two games (at Dixie and at Stansbury) but this team may emerge as the top challenger to Hurricane in Region 9. Top five performances of the week
James Delacenserie QB Wasatch
Delacenserie was 14-19 for 442 yards and six touchdowns. He connected with receiver Kayden Connor four times for 224 yards and two touchdowns while another receiver Talem Franco caught 7 passes for 159 yards and three scores in the Wasps 42-13 win over North Sanpete. Luke Falk QB Logan
Falk came up with another impressive performance completing 25 of 37 passes for 386 yards and five touchdowns in a 54-20 win over Bonneville. Eddy Hall RB Mountain Crest
Hall had a busy night with 33 carries for 253 yards and two touchdowns in a 44-24 win over Sky View. Brandon Farmer RB Herriman
Farmer stepped in for starter Francis Bernard and put on a show. He had 229 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just 7 carries. He scored on runs of 80 and 86 yards in a 56-7 win over Hillcrest. Adam Thompson RB/S Hurricane
Thompson carried the ball 10 times for 112 yards and three touchdowns. He also intercepted a pass in the final two minutes to clinch a 34-32 victory in a huge region game.
