(KSL News) As the weather warms up, more bicyclists and motorcyclists hit the roads.

Already this year, five Utah cyclists have died in wrecks, and that's just in the last month and a half.

The most recent crash happened on Friday in St. George. A 19-year-old Dixie College student died during a motorcycle accident.

She was a passenger on a bullet bike. The driver was going about 80 miles an hour on a city street, braked on a curve, and she was thrown 200 feet. She wasn't wearing a helmet.

In Draper last month, a man braked quickly and his motorcycle flipped. He skidded more than 30 feet. He died from severe head injuries. He also wasn't wearing a helmet.

A couple of weeks ago, a man died riding a bicycle in Utah County. He was with a group, near the back of the pack. He didn't see the leader slow down as they approached some gravel. He hit the tire of a fellow rider, fell into the road, and a pick up truck ran into him.

Police offer some tips, and while they're common sense, they can save lives.

  • Take a riding course, especially before driving a motorcycle
  • Wear a helmet
  • Drive defensively
  • Know your surroundings
  • Obey the speed limit
  • Watch the road for holes and loose gravel
