SALT LAKE CITY — Nearly 4,000 volunteers throughout the Salt Lake area took part in the United Way's annual Day of Caring on Thursday.

Volunteers helped out at schools and performed other acts of service throughout the day.

Students at four Salt Lake Elementary schools attended reading assemblies, starring KSL staff members with the "Read Today" initiative. Students that knew the correct book lines could win prizes.

Then employees read one on one with kids or helped the teachers in classrooms.

In the spirit of the United Way's Day of Caring, the goal was to show students that people do care and want them to succeed.

"The Opportunity to see the growth of young children with just a little bit of attention consistently applied makes all the difference," said Keith McMullin, CEO of Deseret Media.

That's one of many reason why the Read Today program is leading an effort to get school volunteers year round, not just on the Day of Caring.

One hour a week, spent reading to a child, can truly make a difference in their ability to read. If individuals would like to read with students in local neighborhood school, just go to readtoday.com to get involved.
