PROVO, Utah (AP) -- The 97-seat Alpine Playhouse has closed after less than two years operation due to a lack of funds.

It sold out 70 to 80 percent of its showings, but it was not enough.

"We never really had that much of a problem with attendance," said Executive Director Robert Brown. "You just have to get outside support."

Brown said it took about eight months to secure nonprofit status and grants often can take a year to apply for and receive.

"We haven't been able to get it fast enough to help us," he said.

The money they did get went mostly to production costs and royalties, which cost as much as $13,000 and $4,000 respectively.

"We only paid a couple of actors," he said.

The playhouse ran 19 shows in its brief life, including "James and the Giant Peach" and "The Foreigner," which will be the final show.
