NORTH LOGAN — A couple's storage unit was ransacked sometime after they moved in with family between homes, and are trying to recover from the loss.

The McNinch family was storing many of their belongings in a storage unit just off of 150 West in North Logan after their selling their home and moving to Logan a few weeks ago. They went back to the storage unit last week to find that the lock had been cut and about half of their belongings were stolen, many of which were new items.

"They took our refrigerator; they took our washer and dryer," said Kirsten McNinch. "We had a brand new Ikea dresser, just various random boxes. We're still not sure what all is missing."

According to the couple, clothes were thrown around the unit, toys stepped on and left broken.

"Some of the things that didn't have any resell value, they were kind of taken in the mayhem," said Jason McNinch. "Little anniversary gifts, things that we've had passed down from my grandparents, who passed on."

The storage units are not in an area known for crime, but police say that, unfortunately, this kind of crime is not uncommon. North Park Police say people should be careful about how and where they choose to store their belongings, as some units are easier targets than others.

"To be honest, storage sheds are a big problem," said North Park Police Sgt. John Italasano. "Especially the storage units that are off by themselves, and don't have any cameras, or don't have any perimeter fence around them."

Police believe that the same group of people might be responsible for a streak recent storage unit break-ins, but do not have any major leads as to who that is.

For now, the McNinches are figuring out how they will recover their losses, as none of it is covered by insurance.
