SALT LAKE CITY — It's no secret the opening of City Creek Center drew away some important businesses from The Gateway, including some heavy-hitters like J-Crew, Banana Republic and soon, The Apple Store.

But the Gateway is getting some fresh faces to fill the vacancies. Four locally owned businesses which got their start in Provo are opening new branches at The Gateway this summer.

La Jolla Grove and Malawi's Pizza are both restaurants currently in Riverwoods in Provo. The boutique Called to Surf will give shoppers a place to buy summer clothing, shoes and accessories, and Blickenstaff's will sell vintage toys and candy that aren't in production anymore, and hopes nostalgia will draw shoppers in.

The toy store's marketing director told us the Gateway is a good fit for them because of all the family foot-traffic all the restaurants will bring them.

Shoppers each have their own reason for enjoying the Gateway.

"We have a little one, and thought it would be fun to come and visit," said shopper Shawna Nation. "We heard about the Discovery Gateway, so we decided to come here and check it out."

But whatever their reason, shoppers we spoke to seemed to think both malls have an important role in Salt Lake City.

"I think that Salt Lake is big enough to have both of them run and both of them to be successful," said shopper Melissa Allen.

With all the new shops and the gorgeous weather out here, Gateway shoppers should be pretty pleased with their experience.
