SALT LAKE CITY — A rare first-edition copy of the Book of Mormon has been stolen from a bookstore in Arizona.
Police said the book was taken sometime during the Memorial Day weekend from Rare and Out of Print Books and Art, in Mesa. Store owner Helen Schlie says the last time she saw the book was when she put it in a fireproof box Friday night.
"Hundreds of people have been in, and many, many people had their picture taken with the book. So many people knew where it was," she said.
Schlie didn't even know it was missing until Monday afternoon when two missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asked to see it.
She says the book is worth about $100,000 but it wasn't insured.
