PROVO — Timpview High School has a new football coach. Cary Whittingham will fill the spot vacated when the former coach, Louis Wong, was fired over financial dealings.

The Deseret News reports Whittingham was offered and accepted the job on Monday.

Whittingham is University of Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham's younger brother. He was already working at Timpview as defensive coordinator under Wong.

Wong's firing capped a series of issues which started last fall, when district officials questioned financial dealings of the program led by Wong. Students protested and parents voiced support for Wong when was suspended, but he was then fired last month.

Timpview's principal, Todd McKee, told the Deseret News a committee of teachers, parents and students helped pick Whittingham to be the new coach out of a field of more than 20 applicants. That committee wanted someone who already knew the boys, the school, and the community, and someone who could continue aspects of Wong's program that extended beyond the football field.

Whittingham told the Deseret News he felt he fit the bill. He hopes everyone can "move forward" into the new football season, which begins June 4.

Whittingham is a Provo alum and was a linebacker at BYU from 1981-1985.
