SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was charged with assault Friday after allegedly chasing a man down with a sword and striking him.

Gavin Ward, 20, was charged in 3rd District Court and accused of attacking Kenneth Duffy and Jamison Debow in a Smith's parking lot at 900 E. 2100 South.

The incident happened when Duffy and Debow approached Ward, who was in his car, and asked him what he wanted, the charges state. Ward allegedly responded by putting his car in reverse and attempting to strike the men with his vehicle. He then opened the trunk of his car, pulled out a sword and chased Debow to a Walgreens and slashed his leg with the sword, according to charging documents.

Witnesses told police Ward then returned to his vehicle and left the scene.

Ward was charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, and aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.
