WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan woman was cited for child abuse after apparently forgetting her 8-month-old granddaughter and leaving her in the car with the windows rolled up.
The infant's grandmother was watching the young girl while her mother was away for military training, said West Jordan Police Sgt. Drew Sanders.
The grandmother went to Deseret Industries, 7166 S. Redwood Road, about 3 p.m. Monday with the girl's aunt. But when the two got out of the car to go in, they forgot the infant and left her in the vehicle with the windows rolled up, Sanders said.
Another man in the parking lot spotted the baby, tried to find the owner of the vehicle in DI, and then called police.
By the time emergency crews arrived, the grandmother was just leaving the store. She opened the car door for fire crews who measured the temperature inside the vehicle at 97 degrees, Sanders said.
The baby was in the car for about 15 minutes. Sanders said she did not appear to suffer from the effects of heat stroke.
"It could have gotten a lot worse," he said.
The grandmother was cited for child abuse, a class-B misdemeanor.
