SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Marathon gets underway tomorrow morning. And the new group who scrambled to put the race together says the days of financial problems and poor race organization are over.

When Peter Handy took over the Salt Lake City Marathon, he had about 60 days to put it together. But he says the race will be a success if no one gets hurt, the weather is good, and if the community can see the past problems are in the past.

A few of the past problems included runners not having enough water and venders and winning athletes not getting paid on time.

But Handy, who organizes major races around the country, said the race will remain financially stable unlike past years under past owners, and it's his goal this year to gain the trust of both the runners and the community. He also hopes to build the Salt Lake Marathon into one of the best spring races around, and make it better each year. He wants Utah to be proud of the event.
