SALT LAKE CITY -- Gas water heaters can cause fire in homes after an earthquake, but they may also be the only source of energy for residents.
Questar Gas tells customers to keep an eye on their gas water heater and the gas meter after an earthquake. An unstable water heater can fall over and break the gas and water lines, so they say to check its stability.
They say never to shut off the meter in any other cases besides the following: if you smell or hear gas, there is structural damage to your home, or if Questar requests it.
Watch the video to learn more, including how to shut off your meter if you need to.
