This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Mr. Mac is an iconic Utah business. Mac Christensen started his men's clothing business in 1967 after working in retail at ZCMI. He started in the bargain basement and worked his way up to being a buyer where he developed valuable relationships with manufactures. With his can-do attitude, he opened the first Mr. Mac at age 30.
With his young family to support, Mac was motivated to be successful. This young entrepreneur also put in the time to learn all angles of the business. The niche Mr. Mac naturally developed was providing suits for young LDS missionaries. In fact, Mr. Mac is now serving their fourth generation of customers who have passed down the tradition of shopping here for men's suits and apparel.
Mac always placed a big focus on taking great care of his customers, and with his staff, has grown these valuable and cherished relationships over many years in business.
In meeting with Stuart Christensen, one of Mac's sons who is in the business along with three other brothers and two of Mac's son-in-laws, he was quick to give his mom, Joan, a lot of credit for the family's success. Stuart said Joan has been tremendously supportive and has a streak of independence which made her a perfect match for Mac. She had the household to run and 8 kids to raise while Mac grew the business to the current nine stores from Logan to Orem.
With Mac's dad, Fred, working for him for 20 years, it makes Mr. Mac a fourth generation business with 150 employees, contributing to Utah's job sustainability and job creation as they expand to their newest location at City Creek Center at 36 S. State Street. This places them close to the historic spot where they started years ago.
Mr. Mac's men's suits and apparel is excited to be part of City Creek Center which opened last Thursday. This 700,000 square foot retail and restaurant space is the only mixed-use mall to open in the United States in 2012.
