SALT LAKE CITY — A missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints severely injured when he was hit by a bus while serving in Brazil.

Elder Britten Schenk is from Hyde Park in Cache County. Church spokesperson, Scott Trotter, said Schenk was waiting on the sidewalk to cross the street in Sao Paulo when he was hit on Friday.

Schenk had emergency surgery to relieve swelling in his brain. His parents are in Brazil now to be with him.

The Schenk family is updating the missionary's status on a blog, and they want to thank all those who have shared their love and concern.

"We have had so many great phone calls, texts and emails," one post reads. "I have shed many tears from a well that I thought had run dry long ago in front of this computer. There have been so many amazing messages of love, support, and stories."
