WEST JORDAN — Police are searching for a driver who slammed into a fire hydrant in West Jordan then fled. Water from the hydrant flooded several units of a nearby apartment complex.
Witnesses saw three cars drive through an intersection on Cobble Ridge Drive near Jordan Landing. Police say one car veered off the road, slammed into a fire hydrant and then left the scene.
The hydrant broke from its base, water gushed out of the ground and flooded eight ground-floor units of the nearby Windgate Apartments. Water was up to ankle deep in some areas.
"We just heard a big boom and went out there and water was rushing everywhere," said resident Lynda Cox.
"I have a disabled daughter that can't stay here because I can't maneuver her around where she needs to go in the water," Cox added. Her daughter was able to stay with friends Sunday night. No other residents had to leave their units.
Jeanne Pratt of the West Jordan Police Department said investigators don't have much of a description to go on in the search for the vehicle that struck the hydrant - just that it was a white sedan. There is no description of the driver.
