(KSL News) It was an exciting day for some Utah high school students when they were united with puppies they'll help raise to be guide dogs.
The people who have been raising the puppies since they left their mother handed them off to students at the Salt Lake City School District Career and Technical Center. These students will prepare the dogs for the high school environment.
"They have to be the soul responsible person caring for the dog. They'll have to learn about training and veterinary things," explained teacher and dog trainer Martine Savageau. "At the end of the year they'll be giving them back, and they'll be going back to guide dogs for the blind where they'll receive formal training."
These are the first students to raise dogs for credit through a school program. In fact, it's the only program of its kind in the country.
