WEST JORDAN — A TRAX train smashed into a vehicle Tuesday, sending the driver to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
The accident happened about 9:20 a.m. at the intersection of 8600 South and 3200 West. A driver traveling east on 8600 South made a right turn at the crossing and was hit by a westbound train, said West Jordan Police Sgt. Drew Sanders.
The crossing arms and warning lights were working, Sanders said. But investigators were not sure Tuesday if the driver was able to see them in time after making the turn or whether the sun may have been a factor.
The front end of the 29-year-old driver's car was hit. Neither alcohol nor drugs were involved in the accident, Sanders said.
The TRAX crossing is the same one where a 15-year-old girl was hit and killed in July.
Shariah Casper had approached the track with a cousin and both had waited as an eastbound train passed. Because of the 12-foot high sound walls in place, Casper didn't see an oncoming westbound train and crossed in front of its path, resulting in her death.
Following the accident, panels in the sound wall were removed to improve pedestrian visibility and a pedestrian gate was installed.
