SALT LAKE CITY -- Five people were evacuated from their home Christmas morning in an apparent case of carbon monoxide poisoning.
After family members started to feel dizzy, they called the Salt Lake City Fire Department.
"The family had CO detector in a detached garage. (They) brought that into the home and it started to alarm," said Captain Brett Key of the Salt Lake Fire Department. The family was evacuated.
The building was a duplex structure, and when fire officials did not get response to knocking on the adjoining residence, they kicked in the door in an effort to make sure that no one had been poisoned inside. Fortunately, no one was home.
One woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of "cumulative" effects of carbon monoxide exposure, according to Capt. Key.
The family will be allowed to stay in at the home, but all combustible utilities have been shut off until the problem has been located and fixed.
The family declined to be interviewed.
