SALT LAKE CITY -- Just a week before Christmas Eve, the Jazz Bear, police officers and Santa hit the stores to give kids something special.
For the kids who might not have as much under their tree this year, Bear Hugs for Christmas shopping day brought together the Bear, Santa and some high school students who wanted to make sure those kids still had a merry Christmas.
"We had almost 600 high school kids show up this morning at 7 a.m. to volunteer to be these little children's chaperones," said Becky White, with Lehi High School.
More than 140 under-privileged children picked out presents while getting teased by their furry new friend.
Included on 6-year-old Kyler Brown's Christmas list were cars, Legos and a Pillow Pet. But he also had some gift shopping to do for others.
Meanwhile, in Hurricane, police officers showed their softer side by teaming up with children to hit store isles.
"I found a whistle, a train whistle and a Captain America shield and a Captain America Mask," said one shopper, James.
It may be a week early, but Santa, the Bear, and some helpers with a badge made sure these children got the Christmas they deserve.
