Randall Jeppesen ReportingApartment burglaries are on the rise in Provo. Authorities say students and families are failing to lock their front doors. Investigators, though, hope a recent arrest will stop the problem, at least for now.
Investigators say the suspect walks from one apartment to the next, seeing if the door is unlocked.
"Ten to twelve apartment burglaries that have happened involve a female walking into the apartment," Provo Police Captain Rick Healey says. He says if people are inside the apartment, the suspect will say, 'wrong apartment,' then move on.
Officers are thanking some quick-thinking renters who called police when the woman walked in their door. They now say the suspect has been cooperative. They say they can link her to at least four burglaries so far.
"Cash stolen out of wallets, cameras, jewelry," Healey lists. He says over the past year, Provo Police have had hundreds of these types of burglaries. Investigators say most would be prevented if people simply locked their doors.
