(KSL News) -- A suspicious package had West Valley Police on alert this afternoon.

A dog found the package in the backyard of a home near 5000 W. 3125 S. Residents called police, who described the item as three foot-long pieces of PVC pipe wrapped together with electrical tape. It looked a lot worse than it is.

Capt. T. McLachlan, West Valley Police Dept.: "It's not a dangerous device. We don't know whether it was a hoax, practical joke or what, but we're glad it turned out this way, much rather have it turn out this way."

Police are now trying to determine who put the package together.

As a precaution, several nearby residents were evacuated from there homes for a short while.
