SALT LAKE CITY -- The key to finding a good stylist is simple: education. That's not limited to where they attended cosmetology school, but extends to whether or not they are perpetually learning, and that they keep up with the latest trends.
To help stylists keep up their education, the North American Creative Director for Sassoon Academies spent the weekend in Salt Lake City, teaching local stylists what's trending this coming year.
Salon International is a London fashion show that showcases what the trend is in hair. Traci Sakosits was part of the team that created this year's looks for Sassoon.
"Those collections are geared toward inspiring the hairdresser," Sakosits said. "They're avant-garde ideas -- not necessarily things that would be taken directly back into the salon for the client but something for the hairdresser to take a step further in design."
Sassoon is known for it's geometry and shape, and Sakosits cuts with precision and control. That technique is what she taught Salt Lake stylists.
" 'Inspirational' would be the first word that comes to mind," said Lindsay Kramer, Salon Keiji stylist. "And an honor and privilege to be a part of something this big."
Forty stylists paid to have Sakosits walk them through design.
"Everything that comes out of her mouth should be taken in and used toward the every day," said Jenn Yamashiro of Salon Keiji.
In her mentoring, Sakosits often gently takes over and guides her students through the steps.
"That's kind of what keeps me going; to inspire others to do what I do," she said.
Sakosits has traveled the world, comb and scissors in hand. So what does she see in the people of Utah and the hair beneath the ski caps?
"I always think there is an edge in the culture, in the youth culture in any city. I do find that here," she said.
