Marc Giauque reporting Box Elder County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man after investigators say he made an unusual bomb threat that prompted the evacuation of several buildings.
Officers say the call came into the Box Elder County Dispatch Center on a cell phone. Chief Deputy Lynn Yeates says the caller stated there was a bomb at a police station, and unless $10,000 was sent to him, it would go off. The caller did not specify which police station.
"The police departments went into lockdown. In some cases, they may have evacuated city offices. We put the sheriff's office dispatch jail complex on lockdown, stopped all the visitation, stopped any visitors from coming into the parking lot," Yeates says.
Authorities say some people were out of their offices for two to three hours.
Detectives say they quickly worked with Qwest to determine the owner of the cell phone, which led them to their suspect, a 24-year old man. Investigators say the suspect has a history with police. He was booked into jail on charges of making a terroristic threat.
