OREM -- A dental office in Orem wants the public's excess Halloween candy for U.S. troops overseas.

Candy buy back events are one way to cut down on kids eating too much candy. But Dr. Damon Swenson at CrossPointe Dental says rather than just buying back the candy and dumping it into the trash, the dental office will team up with nonprofit organization Operation Gratitude, which will send it to U.S. troops worldwide.

Participants can trade the candy for raffle tickets. Items such as an iPod, a Ninetendo Wii, and a Razor scooter are part of the raffle. The charity is also asking for things like lip balm, toothbrushes, hand-knit scarves, gloves and hats.

The Daily Universe reports participants will also have an opportunity to write thank you notes to U.S. soldiers.

CrossPointe Dental has sponsored similar events twice before and gathered more than 500 pounds of candy and 200 thank you cards.
