Randall Jeppesen ReportingPolice are asking parents to keep a better eye on who their children are spending time with. It comes after a 31-year-old man is arrested. Investigators say he had sex with a 15-year-old.
Investigators say the man was renting a place to live from the victim's parents, when he became friends with their daughter.
"She's 15 and he is 16 years older than she is," Provo Police Captain Rick Healey said. He says officers are seeing around 80 similar cases per year of older men preying on kids. Those are the numbers in Provo. Healey says it's happening everywhere.
"A lot of the cases that we have there are family members, neighbors, those kinds of things, that are involved," Healey says.
Healey says parents need to be more aggressive in knowing where their kids are and who they are with. He says the Internet adds to the problem because young teens will talk about things online that they would never bring up in person.
