PROVO -- Stephen Rogers scored 16 points and Brandon Davies made his return with 10 points and a game-high 9 rebounds as the BYU Cougars opened their two-game exhibition slate with a 91-74 rout of Division II Midwestern State.
BYU's win also spoiled the return of former Cougar Michael Loyd Jr. The point guard played for the Cougars from 2007- 2010, but transferred following his sophomore season (He redshirted his freshman year).
Loyd scored 13 points, but hit only 5 of his 19 shots.
All 16 Cougars played in the game, 12 played at least eight minutes; no one played more than Rogers' 23 minutes. Forward Noah Hartsock finished the night with 15 points and eight rebounds. Charles Abouo tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.
Chris Collinsworth came off the bench and score nine points and grabbed six rebounds in just 11 minutes.
Starting point guard Brock Zylstra had six points, five assists and five rebounds.
Overall BYU dominated inside easily winning the rebounding battle, 59-39 and points in the paint, 40-16. They also had 22 second change points.
However, the Cougars did commit 20 turnovers against the high-tempo, faced-paced game of Midwestern State and made only 19 of their 30 free throw attempts.
The Cougars host Dixie State on Friday, Nov. 4 in their exhibition finale. BYU opens the regular season a week later on Friday, Nov. 11 in Logan against in-state rival Utah State.
