SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Senate will consider an effort this summer to give Congress the power to prohibit flag desecration. It's an effort by Senator Orrin Hatch.
The House of Representative approved the amendment in June 2005. Both Representatives Rob Bishop and Chris Cannon voted in favor of it. While Representative Jim Matheson voted against the amendment.
Hatch told the Deseret Morning News that Congress should have the power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag.
Hatch's office says the amendment would not ban flag desecration, such as burning, but would allow Congress to prohibit that if it wanted to.
