(KSL News) Cedar City police caught three teenagers who confessed to stealing more than 23 pounds of marijuana from a Utah Highway Patrol evidence locker.

A police officer arrested the 17-year-olds after spotting a suspicious car parked outside the UHP office. As he approached, they started running, but the officer caught them and found several pounds of pot, pipes and prescription drugs.

One of the teen's fathers works as a UHP officer and the teens admitted they swiped his keys and stole the drugs last October.

No word yet on how many criminal cases were compromised as a result.
