French classical violinist Pierre Nerini has died at the age of 90, his family said on Saturday.

After winning first prize for violin at France's most prestigious music conservatory, the CNSM in Paris, Nerini went on to become first violin in the Paris Opera Orchestra and first solo violinist with the French Conservatory Concert Orchestra, both from 1945 to 1967.

In 1965 he returned to the CNSM to teach violin for 20 years and was awarded France's highest civilian decoration, the Legion of Honour.

Nerini died in his birthplace, Paris, on February 27 and was buried on March 2, his family said.
