(KSL News) A new HBO television series about polygamy is stirring up quite the controversy, and it hasn't even aired its first episode.
"Big Love," produced by actor Tom Hanks, is about the trials and tribulations of a wealthy businessman from Salt Lake City with three wives.
The series is upsetting many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who say it dredges up old stereotypes about their religion, which banned polygamy more than 100 years ago.
Some former polygamists worry the comedy will minimize the real problems of abuse victims in polygamous families. Tapestry Against Polygamy Director Vicky Prunty says she's concerned the show glorifies the lifestyle.
Vicky Prunty, Tapestry Against Polygamy Director: "We want the abuses and other side of polygamy to be shown, and hopefully this will open the door."
Prunty says she is more concerned about a disclaimer HBO is running during the show saying the LDS Church banned polygamy. She says Church members still believe in it and want to practice it again. A Church spokesman rejects those claims.
The series is set to debut March 12th.
