CLIVE, Tooele County — It weighs more than 300 tons — a trailer that was wheeled along by 196 tires because it is longer than a football field.
Don't fault the load lumbering along I-80 in the west desert of Utah for traveling a mere 15 mph. It was headed to Clive, where EnergySolutions plans to dispose of the ailing steam generator of a nuclear power plant in southern California.
Mark Walker, EnergySolutions' spokesman, said the trailer that is the length of one and one-third football fields--that's 400 feet tip to tip--left southern California 18 days ago, traveling anywhere from 25 to 125 miles per 24 hours, mostly by night.
The steam generator, which is actually only 80 feet long, had to be transported on a trailer of this magnitude to disperse its weight and avoid road damage. It is one of four that will come to Utah by the end of the year for burial in the facility's large component area.
