SOUTH SALT LAKE — An Amber Alert was issued but quickly canceled Friday after a child in South Salt Lake was reported as being abducted by a former family acquaintance.

South Salt Lake Police Sgt. David Wirthlin said the 9-year-old boy was safely located by police shortly after the alert was issued.

The woman suspected of taking the boy, Erika Lynn Marsh, 33, was taken into custody, police said.

According to court documents, Marsh's criminal history appears to include convictions for drug possession, joyriding, providing false personal information, criminal mischief and escape from custody.

"So the suspect was familiar to the victim, and it was not a random kidnapping," South Salt Lake police spokesperson Shaun Ward said.

The alleged abduction happened about 9:35 p.m. Thursday near 3850 West Temple, according to Ward.

The Amber Alert said the pair may have been headed toward southern Utah, but they were still in the Salt Lake Valley when police found them.

South Salt Lake police said they appreciative of the collaboration with the Unified Police Department in assisting with the boy's recovery safely and quickly.

"The safety and welfare of children remain our highest priority, and we dedicate immediate, comprehensive resources to every report of a missing child," Wirthlin said.
