SALT LAKE CITY -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wants to make high-speed Internet available in more of its meetinghouses by the end of the year.
[LDSTech](< https://tech.lds.org/index.php/ldstech/1-miscellanous/393-wireless-internet-access-in-meetinghouses>) reports the Church has allowed installation of Internet access in local meetinghouses since 2008. But at the end of last year, only about 50 percent of meetinghouses worldwide had done so. The goal is to expand that to about 85 percent of meetinghouses by 2012.
Those church members and leaders who do have the Internet in their buildings say it's a blessing.
Teachers are able to supplement their lessons with online Church-produced media, job seekers have easier access to the Church's employment website, and more members can participate in family history work online, according to LDSTech.
Until this year, local church units had to pay for their Internet access, which some found limiting. Now that's changed. In an effort to make Internet access standard in meetinghouses, the church's facilities management will pay for Internet costs just like it does for other utilities, LDSTech said.
