TAYLORSVILLE — A 55-year-old man has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of homicide.
George Bruce Jones was arrested Wednesday night for investigation of felony murder and obstruction of justice.
On July 23, police received a call of a possible victim near 1525 West and 4950 South. Detectives found the body of 57-year-old Randy Lee Allred. Allred did not live at the residence but had been staying there, said Taylorsville Police Sgt. Tracy Wyant.
Originally, Allred's death was believed to be due to alcohol or a fall, Wyant said. But upon further investigation, it was discovered that Allred had sustained blunt force trauma injuries to his back and back of his head, according to Salt Lake County Jail documents.
Evidence collected placed Jones at the scene when the crime occurred, jail records state. Jones told detectives he and another person were present. But police also noted in their interview that Jones, "was deceptive throughout the investigation and had the means, motive and opportunity to cause" the victim's death, according to jail records.
Upon further investigation, Wyant said detectives learned it was Jones who made the call to police using an alias.
Jones and Allred knew each other, he said. But police weren't giving out specific details Thursday on a possible motive.
