Shelley Osterloh ReportingSuccess for some Utah athletes, disappointment for others.

In the Giant Slalom, Bode Miller was the top American finisher in sixth, while Park City's three-time Olympian Erik Schlopy came in 13th. Ted Ligety, who won gold in the combined, skied out on his first run.

Ted Ligety/ U.S. Skier: "Came over that one roll and lost a little bit of an edge and went out. So, kind of a bummer, but it's okay. I've got my better event still to come."

Erik Schlopy/ U.S.Skier: "I think the course is tough. There's sharp rolls and a lot of terrain, and it's really icy and bumpy. You've got to go for it at the Olympics, and that's what guys are doing."

Only the top 12 of 31 men go on to the final round in freestyle aerials. Of the four Americans, only one made it. 2002 silver medalist Joe Pack missed the cut when he caught an edge after landing.

Joe Pack/ U.S. Skier: "I've had a pretty long career, and those people that have supported me my entire life, I've got to say thank you very much, I really appreciate it."

Four-time Olympian and gold medalist from 1998, Eric Bergoust, jumped well but slightly missed the landing. He finished in 17th.

And Ryan St. Onge, in his first Olympic games, also failed to make the top twelve, but said he's had a wonderful time anyway.

Ryan St. Onge/ U.S. Skier: "Had a great time. Unbelievable, you know. It was not at all what I expected, and everything I'd hoped for. It was fantastic."

Only one American skier survived to make it into the finals. Jeret "Speedy" Peterson finished 8th.

Jeret "Speedy" Peterson/ Qualified For Finals: "It came down to just doing my best and doing what I know how to do."

So Speedy Peterson is the only one who makes it into the finals. Watch him go for the gold on Thursday.

Tomorrow Park Citys' Emily Cook and Jana Lindsey compete in the women's aerials qualifying competition.
