It was a day when Salt Lake Olympic officials and the security folks told people NOT to come downtown!
It happened on Day 9, as we continue to look back!
"At this point Salt Lake Olympic square is reaching its capacity...we anticipate that your wait from this point is one hour to one and a half hours!"
Day 9 of the Salt Lake games fell on Saturday-- and it appeared that Utahn's-- seeing all the fun on their TV screens-- now wanted to come and get their Olympic experience in person. No matter how long they had to wait!
"So you're ready for a 90 minute wait? We are. We need food though..."
It was a sea of people, at least 50,000 strong for a time!
On this night, the next controversy with an athletic event: Short track favorite, Apollo Ohno, was tripped heading for the finish line. He managed to crawl across to earn a silver medal.
The luckiest Gold Medal winner of the games-- Steven Bradbury from Australia! He was in last place, until everybody in front of him fell.
With the news that the Canadian Ice Skating team would get a gold medal, Canada's Olympic clothing store was now very busy! Long lines formed outside the Main Street store-- everybody wanted to buy something with a Maple leaf on it!
We heard the Canadian National Anthem a lot-- everyone was singing it!
