MURRAY — A family argument turned violent Friday night, ending when a 19-year-old man stabbed his 42-year-old father multiple times in the chest, according to police. The son then fled the scene where the family lived in the basement of a house in the area of 6300 S. River Bluffs Rd.

Police set up a quarter-mile square containment area, according to Murray Police Sgt. Jake Huggard, and located the suspect, a white male, around 11 p.m., taking him into custody.

The father was taken to Intermountain Medical Center, but when police arrived around 10 p.m., the man was standing on the porch and walking around and talking, Huggard said.

"It appears his injuries are not all that severe."

The incident began when the two, along with the father's ex-wife (the 19-year-old's mother) who also lives in the home, were drinking together Friday evening, according to police. The father and son got into a fight, and the son was hit in the face, possibly breaking his nose. Huggard said. When the woman, 39, tried to intervene, her wrist was injured and may have been broken as well, he added.

The son then got a knife, stabbed his father several times, and then took off, he said. Police cordoned off the area from 1300 West to the Jordan River, and from Winchester Street south to I-215, and used K-9 dogs and officers to help locate the suspect.

Because of the size of the search area, officers from nearby cities also came to assist. Huggard said, "We just didn't know how severe it was going to be."
