Samantha Hayes ReportingNot to be outdone by their male counterparts, the U.S. women's snowboarding team took up two-thirds of the medals stand, taking home both gold and silver in the half-pipe. And, it was one slip away from an American sweep.
The women stopped by last night wearing their medals and very big smiles.
Nineteen- year-old, and first time Olympian, Hannah Teter took gold. Teammate and fellow first-timer Gretchen Bleiler took silver. Judges take the best score of two runs, so Teter knew after Bleiler finished that she had the gold.
Hannah Teter/Gold medalist: "When I found out it was a victory lap....so unreal! I just wanted to go off and go as big as I could. It was cool!"
Gretchen Bleiler/silver medalist: "It's been a life long dream and a goal. I worked really hard to get here and I feel if I have accomplished this, I feel like I can do anything now."
2002's gold medalist Kelly Clark finished fourth, barely out of the third place. A slight bobble and slip on the landing of her final jump cost Clark a place on the podium. A difficult jump she didn't necessarily need to medal, but as Clark put it, "It's the Olympics. You just go for it."
