SALT LAKE CITY — Thousands of feet will soon be pounding the pavement in one of the fastest and challenging marathon courses in the country.
The Deseret News Marathon is a state holiday tradition in Salt Lake City. And if you've ever thought about running a race, this could be the perfect time.
"Go for it. There's no better time than the present to start moving," says local running coach Scott Browning. "Get up and start with a walk; everything starts with one foot forward."

Unless you've already been running long distances, there's not time to run the marathon, But there is still time to train for the Read Today 5K. It's only 3.1 miles, and Browning says you can do it.
"Running has a lot of misconceptions," Browning says. "I think everybody can learn to run, but I think the key aspect of that is that running is like any other sport: it's learned."
Browning says learning to run isn't hard, it just takes a plan — some good running shoes, a training schedule from a qualified trainer, consistency, and taking cues from your body.
"Execute your plan so if you're going to choose an event to do you've given yourself enough time," Browning says. Set realistic goals, get a training plan that you're willing to follow, that's realistic for your life. … That's the simplest way to success."
Give yourself time to prepare, then trust your training. Browning says running is fun, when you do it right.
"Have fun. Go out with a really super positive mindset, trust your training, and go out and just enjoy the experience. Get caught up in it. It's really a lot of fun," he says.
Browning has mapped out a beginner's 5K plan, and it starts Monday. If you follow the plan, you'll be ready for the Read Today 5K — part of the Deseret News Marathon — on July 25th. CLICK HERE for more information.
