Gene Kennedy ReportingPolice arrested seven people overnight in a big drug bust. One those arrested is Hurricane Katrina evacuee from New Orleans.
The suspects in this bust just kept coming. Police say they were selling drugs in the Pioneer Park area.
In this case, there were not only a lot of suspects, but during the bust, nearly a dozen people showed up at the front door. It's a sign of how active this house was.
With cameras rolling, the home at 555 N. 800 West turned into a revolving door of suspects. Police say the group distributed crack cocaine, marijuana, meth and pharmeceutical drugs at a Salt Lake homeless shelter in the Pioneer Park area.
Police seized about $1,000 worth of crack cocaine. Officers hope this bust will make a dent in the drug sales at the park and also reduce demand.
Meantime, one of the suspects had a 12-year-old daughter in the home. She's now with Child and Family Services, and the suspect also is charged with child endangerment.
Sgt. Ryan Atack, SLC PD: "Statistics show that a child living in that environment has an astronomically higher chance, percentage-wise, to follow in those same footsteps and enter into the drug world. If we can separate them from that, that's one of our high priorities."
Police say the suspects were not necessarily dealing to make a ton of money, but rather just selling enough to feed their own habit.
