HOLLADAY — A woman was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday after she was shot in the chest during what appears to be an attempted robbery.
The 45-year-old woman had been packing up some belongings at her home near 3900 South and 900 East and stopped to take a break around 2 a.m., Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said. She and her boyfriend were sitting in a makeshift shed behind their house when a man wearing a ski mask walked in, aimed a gun at them and demanded jewelry and money.
"He immediately goes to the female and tries to pull her up out of her chair," he said. "A short struggle ensues and he takes a step back and shoots the victim."
The gunman immediately fled from the scene. Police investigators are currently looking for a Caucasian male in his 30s between 190 and 200 pounds.
The woman was transported to an area hospital in extremely critical condition, but was upgraded to critical but stable condition late Thursday morning.
Police do not believe this case is related to an incident at a 7-Eleven convenience store Wednesday in which a masked gunman shot a clerk. Investigators believe the woman shot Thursday may have been specifically targeted.
Anyone with information regarding this incident has been asked to call police at 801-743-7000.
