SALT LAKE CITY — Here comes the Utah Mammoth?
The Smith Entertainment Group may have accidentally revealed the permanent name of the Utah Hockey Club.
Late Tuesday night, a few fans began to realize that the team's YouTube account handle had changed from @UtahHockeyClub to @UtahMammoth. Soon enough, the potential leak was spreading across social media, which led to the account being removed — or at least privatized.
So what happened?
"Progress continues on exploring all three of the name options that were chosen as finalists by our fans," SEG executive Mike Maughan said when asked about the YouTube hiccup. "We're fully on track to announce a permanent name and identity ahead of the 2025-26 NHL season, and look forward to sharing that with our fans."
He didn't confirm the name was going to be Mammoth, but he also didn't deny that the YouTube change had occurred.
So did someone jump the gun? Or was the team squatting on the handle just in case?
Time will tell.

Utah Mammoth is one of the three finalists for the team name, along with Utah Outlaws and Utah Hockey Club. In late January and early February, the team held an in-person fan vote between those three names, which included branding and logos.
The team has filed for trademark application extensions for the three name finalists, and an important date is approaching.
May 5 is the response deadline for both the Utah Hockey Club and Utah Mammoth trademark applications, and those responses — or lack thereof — might further clear things up.
Earlier in April, team president Chris Armstrong said the team is "definitely in the home stretch and on track to announce that in the coming months."
Did months just turn to weeks?
The team's YouTube account certainly implied that on Tuesday.
