ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Angels selected first baseman C.J. Cron of Utah with the 17th pick in the first round of the first-year player draft.
Cron was a two-time player of the year in the Mountain West Conference.
Angels scouting director Ric Wilson says the team likes Cron's power and hit combination and see him as a middle-of-the-order-type hitter.
During his recently completed junior season, Cron hit .434 with 26 doubles, 15 home runs and 59 RBIs in 49 games. His batting average was third-highest in the country.
Cron becomes the first player in Utah baseball history selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft.
