MOAB —Fire crews battled a blaze near Matheson Preserve late into the night Monday. Moab Valley Fire District Chief Corky Brewer said that the burn was not yet contained, but a line had been established around the burning area.
Brewer said the fire burned an area of approximately 60 acres and came within a matter of inches of homes. Fire crews issued a non-mandatory evacuation request of about 200 homes that was lifted Monday night.
"The biggest problem we're facing with right now is we still have the gusts of wind," Brewer said.
Brewer anticipated that it would take from three to four days before the fire would be officially extinguished.
"We'll probably be two days, minimum, of getting a good, good containment and probably another day or two after that to call lit out," Brewer said.
As of Monday night, there had been no injuries or property damage due to the fire. During the day, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for South Central Utah and the Dixie and Zion Canyon areas.
The red flag warning was stated to be in effect until 10 p.m. Monday due to a combination of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures. The National Weather Service reported winds in the region between 15 and 25 mph with gusts over 35 mph continuing through the afternoon but tapering off into the evening.
